Samantha (Sam) Stokes is an extremely friendly and personable, seventeen year old athlete from Lincoln, who is attending Milan High School as a school of choice.  Samantha started taking swimming lessons with Julie Harvey and her sister Kerry in the Makos Club in Milan when she was ten years old.  Sam began coming to classes when she was in 5th grade and shortly after her mom had started teaching in Milan.  She knew almost immediately that she wanted to come to school in Milan so she could have the benefit of the pool and swim training that were not available to her in Lincoln. She progressed through the classes and up the ladder to be able to take lessons from Dan Heikka at the high school when she was thirteen.

I thought it was quite impressive that Samantha was a state qualifier already with just a few weeks into the season.  Then I learned she is also pretty smart with a 4.125 GPA and she has also earned herself a score of 28 on her ACT.  She took AP Calculus and Chemistry and has recently been accepted to Michigan Tech where she will study Wildlife Management & Ecology.  She loves animals and at any given time in her childhood she explained that there were 3 horses, thirty-plus goats, a few pigs and rabbits as well as a dog at her home.

If that isn’t enough Sam is also classically trained in vocals and sang with the Ann Arbor Youth Corral which is an auditioned position and led by Shayla Powell the choir director for Milan High School.  She has been in 4-H, plays the trombone, frequently sings at various local events and has also been in 3 drama productions at Milan High School.  Sam is a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Ann Arbor and her mother is, as Sam puts it, 100% Greek.

Sam has a fifteen year old sister who chose to go to Green Hills in Ann Arbor instead of joining Sam here in Milan.  She and her family were recently able to visit Greece and the island of Crete where her family originated.  The family then traveled to Athens where Sam explains that she learned a little more about her family and enjoyed learning the culture and visiting with relatives.  Sam would like to publically thank Coach Heikka and Kerry for their endless support of her.  “They have been amazing and made me who I am today”, says Stokes.    Of course my parents and family have been so supportive and loving and given me everything I could have ever wanted.

Immediately before our interview, during the swim meet with Dundee on September 19, 2013 Samantha qualified for State in the 500 meter Freestyle. Kelsey Winsell also qualified for State in the 100 meter Breast Stroke.  Congratulations to them both!
