Milan Seniors for Healthy Living enjoy annual fair

The Milan Seniors for Healthy Living annual Health Fair held on October 7, 2014 (the first Tuesday in October), got off to a great start with approximately 29 vendors setting up information and service tables; and more than 70 members and community participants attending the days event, that ran from 12:00 noon to 4:00pm.  Many participants arrived early that day, at the Milan Senior Center, eager to begin meeting with vendors.

Seniors look forward to this annual Health Fair event, now in its twelfth year, as a day they can be assured to get their annual Flu Shots, which kept Kroger’s Pharmacy booth busy all morning; and having an opportunity to discuss medication plans with a pharmacist; receive podiatry/foot care and advice; and hearing tests; blood pressure checks; along with housing, Medicare/Medicaid assistance, social security, legal and financial planning opportunities.

This year, with the kickoff of the infallibility program, balance screening and fall risk assessments, by Plymouth Physical Therapy, was made accessible and follow-ups will continue into the future.  Dr. Eduardo Enriquez from Milan Physical Therapy has been giving educational presentations, October 16 was Neuromuscular Changes We Face as We Age.  Sue  Collins, the fitness coordinator from Say Yes Fitness,  was on hand to explain SilverSneakers  and how seniors benefit from exercise.

Another big plus, is having a place to bring personal documents, which need shredding, for peace of mind.  This secure service was available in the parking lot during the health fair.

A new added dimension this year was having home cooked meals, by MSHL’s very own employee, Cherrita Lewis, which kept the kitchen smelling great; and vendors and participants were happy to be able to take a break for a much enjoyed meal or order a “carry-out” meal to take home.

With over 20 members putting Health Fair signs in their yards, at their homes; and volunteering at registration booths, and in the kitchen, serving hot coffee and other drinks and snacks; the dedication of our senior members to assist in any way they can, to help make events successful for Milan Seniors for Healthy Living programs, is very evident and much applauded.
