Milan to join housing program

Press release

Wayne Workman, interim executive director of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) announced today 12 Michigan communities, including Milan, have been selected to take part in the Michigan Main Street Associate Level program.

“Michigan’s economy cannot thrive without vibrant downtowns,” Workman said. “This program creates opportunities for redevelopment, placemaking and economic growth in downtowns across our state.”

Milan will receive training over the next year on the basics of the Main Street Four Point Approach®, including organization, promotion, economic restructuring and design. The training will be conducted by staff from the Michigan Main Street Center at MSHDA and Select and Master Level Main Street communities.

Studies show that investing in placemaking creates vibrant centers and downtowns that retain and attract talent, making the state economically stronger. Main Streets exist as places of civic and community congregation and are a reflection of what is loved about the towns and neighborhoods people call home.

Mayor Armitage states that, “This is great opportunity for the City of Milan as we reenergize our Downtown by supporting our business and activities already here and recruiting future businesses. The tools that will be available to the City will be beneficial and we look forward to working with the Main Street Program.”
