Hack House to celebrate Sunday on the Porch

By Joyce Erviin

The Friend-Hack House Museum,775 County Street, will celebrate their Sunday on the Porch event through September from 1 to 4 p.m.  There is no charge to visit and cookies and lemonade await guests.
Tour the house, visit the famous three-seater outhouse and enjoy the gardens that are maintained by the Milan Garden Club.
While there, be sure to keep an eye out for a special display of barber equipment spanning the years from the 1870s through the 1950s.  The artifacts are a combination of Mitch Smith and Milan’s barber Ray Novara’s collection.
Smith said the historical society was looking for something new  to place in the display case.  “Someone mentioned my collection, so I brought some pieces over,” Smith said.
Viewers can enjoy seeing many things no longer or rarely used these days by men to include razor straps, razor blade sharpeners, shaving mugs and brushes, safety razors, straight razors and some barber shop signage
If nothing thus far has captured your interest, make plans to attend the annual Fall Festival that is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4 from 12 to 4 p.m. This is a no charge event including a tour of the 1800s house.
You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy this free event.  Vendors selling all things Fall will be on hand.  Demonstrations of long ago crafts; quilting, spinning, bobbin lace and more will be featured throughout the house and yard.  Antique tractors will be on display.
Corn shelling, apple cider making, old fashioned laundry day with antique washers, sawing logs with a two-man cross cut saw and lots of other hands-on activities will be on tap.
A food truck vendor will be on the grounds selling hot dogs and sausages so plan to stop by for lunch.
Mark your calendars to join historical society volunteers for all of these events.
