Rev. Vern Campbell died August 27, 2015, following a battle with cancer, at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife Doris Ann and two cousins: Arlo Dunkelberger and Marcia Price. Vern came to Milan in 1963 and served Peoples Presbyterian Church in Milan, Michigan 31 years. He retired from ministry in 1995. Because of his interest in the community he served on the Parks and Recreation Commission and was instrumental in the development of the parks in Milan. He was appointed to the first Parks and Recreation committee for the City of Milan and led that committee as its first chair. He served on the Parks and Recreation Commission until 1995.
Rev. Campbell heard the Federal Government was giving away 139 acres of Parkland along Sanford Road near Arkona Road, and that a local government in the area could apply and perhaps receive the land at no cost. He approached city council and was able to convince them to vote “yes” to apply for an application to receive the property. After the City of Milan was awarded the property, he contacted a local farmer to plow, disc, and clean out the land to make it ready for use. Shortly before his death, Vern was honored when Sanford Road Park was re-named Vern R. Campbell Park.
Vern was a member of the Rotary Club of Mila. His hobbies were radio control airplanes and antique cars. He was a founding member of the Milan Radio Control Milan flyers. He loved restoring and driving old cars. He restored a 1918 Model T Roadster, and three Maxwells: 1911, 1910 and 1908. Vern took many people for rides and to dinner in his 1924 Buick.
A Memorial Service will take place at Peoples Presbyterian Church, Milan, Michigan at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 20. In lieu of flowers memorials can be given to Compassion and Choices or Peoples Presbyterian Church.
