Morigan Kiernan has continued her efforts in Wrestling working towards her dream to one day compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship as an MMA fighter. She practices with many different teams but a great deal of the credit when it comes to her improvement comes from her time with Coach Shawn Olsabeck, the former coach of Lincoln Junior High School, and Coach Ron Silveria of Dundee Wrestling Club. When Morigan came to Dundee practices she was the only girl in the room but the boys there took her in. They gave her no special treatment, pushing her very hard but encouraging her and coaching her along the way.
This Folkstyle season Morigan placed in tournaments against boys several times including seven gold medals. But her real accomplishments came in the girl’s division. At the MyWay State Championship she went to the finals, taking home a Silver after an exciting match where she had her opponent on her back and nearly pinned before time ran out. She went on to once again compete at the NuWay National Championships placing 3rd overall, with notable victories by pin over State Champions from Ohio and Wisconsin. Her placement at Nationals once again gave her the honorary title of “All American”. Morigan also finished the season ranked #12 in her age group out of 155 wrestlers in Monroe County.
After Folkstyle season concluded, Morigan continued wrestling on into the Freestyle and Greco-Roman season with her Freestyle team Betts’ Army coached by Lincoln High School Coach Mike Betts. Winning silver and bronze medals in the boy’s divisions, and two gold medals in the Girl’s division. Her Freestyle/Greco season ended with her winning the USA Freestyle State Championship for girls, avenging one of her losses from last year against Taylor Randolph of Clinton.
Morigan currently attends Symon’s Elementary school, and has moved her focus to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Royce Gracie Academy of Michigan where she hopes to do well in competition.
She has also continued training in Boxing, and taken up Gymnastics to help her develop her strength and agility in preparation for the next wrestling season. She still loves to read, and is above grade level in all subjects at school.
