The first sign of the new school year is football and soccer practice on the fields, tennis outside on the courts, swimming and volleyball practice going on inside and then a few weeks later the games begin.
We caught up to the girls’ volleyball team as they were just starting their first practices for the season on 8.16.2016. The girls were working on serves, getting angles correct and directing the ball where they are wanting it to go once it leaves their hand. The practice serves for both varsity and junior varsity were looking strong and tight.
Coach Chris Christian says Milan varsity volleyball should have a pretty strong team this year based on the current numbers.  There were only three new players that are moving into the varsity team, two are incoming freshmen and one is a sophomore moving up from the junior varsity team.
Coach Christian explained that many of the junior varsity players from last year are also dedicated softball players and chose to focus on varsity softball this year instead of splitting time and trying to stay in shape for softball while also practicing and playing volleyball.
This makes for a challenging junior varsity team because they now have a young team with an even split of five freshman and five sophomore players with the remaining freshman playing for the freshman team.
