Milan firefighters stood at city intersections on December 3 holding out their boots, while passersby dropped money in them for a very worthy cause. Capt. Frederick Evans, who spearheaded the “Fill the Boot” effort, said, “Some grabbed change from their consoles, others put in a few dollars and others donated a twenty-dollar bill.”
That collective effort, amounted to the firefighters collecting $5,600 for Aid in Milan. Evans said, “We shattered all records.”
The record amount was collected in just five hours prompting Mayor Michael Armitage to say, “It’s amazing to raise that amount in such a short time.”
Grateful for the donation, Aid in Milan president, Dennis O’Hare said the money would go toward toys for Christmas, boots, hats, gloves and coats for Milan kids.
Fire Chief Bob Stevens presented program director, Amy Doyle, with the check at the station on Dec. 5 in time for Christmas.  Doyle said, “We’re so grateful and impressed, and we are looking forward to making this Christmas the best at Aid in Milan.”
Stevens said his people go out every year in the cold to interact with the community and the community support for this project is overwhelming.  He also said, “We are very proud to support Aid in Milan for their efforts.”
Those participating were firefighters, Mark Evans, Aaron Straub, Gerald Bright, Charles Allen, Kevin Maury, Anthony Pegouskie, Ryan Kovacs and Brian Walls.  Money counters included Evans, Connie Evans and Greg Brickley.
