The Milan Big Reds boys varsity basketball team played 8 games in the month of February, all except one being in Huron League conference play.
They began the month with a 51-41 loss to SMCC on Feb. 3 in Monroe. A vast improvement from their 19-point loss in Milan two weeks prior, the Big Reds never trailed by more than four. The game was tied at five different points, including being squared up at 18 at halftime, and again at 32 after the third frame. Milan held brief leads at two different points in the 4th, by three and two points respectively, but failed to maintain momentum from that point forward.
The Big Reds then rattled off a six-game win streak – with victories over Jefferson, Airport, New Boston Huron, Riverview and Flat Rock – before losing to Grosse Ile in the conference finale. In all, Milan finished 11-3 in Huron League play, good enough for 2nd place. SMCC, last year’s champion, cruised to 1st with a 14-0 record.
At the time of this writing, Milan (11-7 overall) still has one game left in the February slate, a contest on Feb. 27 against Arbor Prep. The regular season wraps up on March 2 at Dexter.
Regional playoffs begin on Monday, March 6, and Milan will begin at Airport High School with a matchup against Ida. Should they defeat the Bluestreaks, the Big Reds would play Airport on March 8. The other two teams, Dundee and Jefferson, face off in the game prior to the Airport matchup; the district final is on March 10.
Milan High School hosts a regional that begins on March 13, with the final taking place on the 15th. The regional winner would then move onto Chelsea before heading to East Lansing.
