Eternity Matters: RESPECT – where has it gone?

By Norma Shull Smith

Perhaps I grew up in a different era, but to me an era and culture should never replace the importance of respect. Where has it gone? I see so many things happening in today’s world that has thrown RESPECT out the door and grown adults, Christians, and more and more churches have bought into it, hook, line, and sinker.
There are no guidelines today and few role models. We see disrespect everywhere, from kids who yell at their parents and grandparents, groups slamming our men and women in blue, boys who wear their jeans and shorts so there underwear is revealed and they have to walk bull-legged to keep them from falling down, professional athletes rebelling and sitting during the raising of the flag and national anthem, right down to people bringing water and coffee into the sanctuary and preachers wearing ball caps while they preach or pray. There is absolutely no respect for the office of the leader of the free world; it’s gone and how did this happen in just a few short years…..people became complacent and gave in just a little, then a little bit more, then more, to the point RESPECT got up and left!
Oh I am sure I will not be popular after this is published, but truth needs to be told. This is not legalism, it is pure lack of respect.
Would you wear a sport cap to a beautifully set banquet table? This is just an illustration, but it would have never happened in my era. The hat was to be removed and if you wore a hat to a sporting event the cap came off and was placed with your hand over your heart during the National Anthem.
I can’t help but think of that song, “I can only imagine!” What will we do when we see Jesus face to face; will we dance before him, or will we stand, will we bow, will we sing Hallelujah or even be able to speak at all? One thing is sure, I believe with all my heart when we stand or kneel before him, it will be with total, entire reverence and respect!
Have you ever felt like our institutions and morals have relaxed so much that everything goes today and where does that leave the little ones growing up? If there is no training to respect parents and elders, elected officials, teachers, police, pastors, the sanctuary, the national flag and most of all to respect the very one we come to praise within the sanctuary, how will the next generation every learn to put respect back into its proper place? Will there be a day when Respect knocks back on our individual hearts and we open the door and welcome it back home?
