Good Week for softball!

By Ann Raubuch

Milan Varsity Softball took on Adrian at home in a doubleheader earlier this week and won both games by run rule mercy. Sophomore pitcher Makayla Maurer earned the 17-2 win in game one, throwing 4 innings, only giving up 4 hits, 2 runs and striking out seven. Freshman Pitcher Emily Raubuch earned the win in game two.  The Lefty pitcher threw for 6 innings, surrendering 4 runs on five hits and striking out 11.
Milan JV also played games against Adrian at home. Sophomore Emma Frame earned her first win throwing a five inning shutout with 4 strike outs.  Abby Knechtel also earned a win in game two against Adrian.
The Varsity team played host to Garden City, Belleville, and Taylor Kennedy High Schools in the Big Red Classic Tournament on Saturday.  In the first game of the day against Garden City, the Big Reds jumped out to an early lead thanks to a two-run home run from Maddie Davis in the first inning. Garden City would tie it up at 3-3 in the third and eventually win in by run rule in the 5th by the score of 13-3.
Emily Raubuch earned a shut out win in the second game of the day against Belleville.  Milan once again grabbed an early lead as Samantha Hill hit a bunt single. Emily Mitchell drew a walk, and Hill was brought in with a line drive single by Sam Maurer.
Several batters later Haleigh Hines singled to bring in Milan’s 6th and final run of the inning.   Every Milan batter got a hit in the game including a 3 hit performance by Right Fielder, Kailey Swiss. Emily Raubuch was excellent in the circle, throwing five innings of 1 hit softball and striking out 9.  Milan run-ruled Belleville with a final score of 13-0.
Milan won game three against Taylor Kennedy by a score of 7-5.  Rachel Bell started the game in the circle allowing 4 hits and 4 strike outs in three and two-thirds innings.
Big Reds led for most of the game however Taylor Kennedy staged a comeback attempt in the fourth inning but was held short by Makayla Maurer, who came in to pitch relief. Five girls had a multiple hit game, including a triple and double from Emily Raubuch who finished the game 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s.
The Tournament was a huge success much in part due to the help of many softball families who donated time running concession stands, field maintenance, admissions tables and also donating food for the concession stands.  The softball program brought in roughly $800.
The JV team traveled to Woodhaven for a double header. They lost game one 27-0 and despite having bases loaded in a 7th inning rally in game two the JV Big Reds fell short and lost a heart breaker 8-6.
