Big Reds Celebrate Seniors and Gear up for Districts

Monday was Senior Night. The Big Reds hosted Flat Rock for their second game of the home and home series. Milan was looking to sweep the series. It was a 1 run game until Milan surrendered 3 runs in the 7th. The ladies fought back with a single by Sam Hill. Emily Mitchell reached on an error, then Sam Maurer singled a line drive to centerfield to score Hill. With two runners on and no outs things were looking good for the comeback but Flat Rock’s Sarah Kopp proved to be too much and retired the next three batters. Immediately following the game this years 5 seniors were celebrated on the field for their contributions to the program over the past four years. This years Seniors are, #66 second baseman Emily Mitchell, #23 pitcher and right fielder Rachael Bell, #12 outfielder Kailey Swiss, #16 Centerfielder Chloe Duffiney, and #1 first baseman Kaylynn Foster. All five girls share the great memory of hosting and winning districts last season. Their district games were simultaneous with the Milan Fair which has a fire works show every year. The fireworks shot off after Milan successfully came from behind to beat Chelsea. Timing could not have been any more perfect. Each of them said their favorite softball moment was winning the game and and it feeling like the fireworks were just for them.
Wednesday’s game vs Grosse Ile was rained out but on Friday, Milan avenged their earlier season loss to Airport. The Big Reds stranded runners in 4 innings and finally broke through in the 6th inning when Maddie Davis was walked. Jules Markham put down sacrifice bunt which moved Davis to second base and Clare Chie hit a line drive single to score the games only run.  Airport had one last try however, a fly out to left fielder Markham and two strike outs ended the game. Both Pitchers had strong performances. Taking the loss was #11 Amy Clegg for Airport. She threw 6 innings, surrendered 4 hits, 1 walk, 1 run and had 6 strike. Emily Raubuch pitched her third shut out for Milan. She thew 7 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6.
Milan will wrap up regular season play on Tuesday with a double header against Whiteford which was rescheduled due to inclement weather in April.  The girls are gearing up for the post season and feeling confident going into Districts which start Saturday, June 3rd against Adrian. Milan defeated Adrian in both games of their double header earlier this season. If the Big Reds get past Adrian they will face off against the winner of Tecumseh vs. Chelsea. Districts are being hosted by Tecumseh this year.
