Dundee Area Senior Citizen Center

By Janet Buccirosso

Nancy Clark is the energetic Executive Director of the Dundee Area Senior Citizen Center which celebrated its 50th anniversary on September 11, 2016. The center serves Dundee and the surrounding area including, but not limited to, Petersburg, Ida, Maybee, Deerfield and Britton. It is run by a staff of 5 and has approximately 123 volunteers. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and serves seniors who want lunch at noon on those days for a nominal fee. Funding for the center comes from the Monroe County Commission on Ageing’s Senior Millage, the United Way through designations to Meals on Wheels and LIFE (Living Independently for Everyone). Additional funds are raised through various fundraisers throughout the year. They offer the public breakfast the 1st Wednesday of the month and usually offer a dinner service the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. Their next major fundraiser is a Pig Roast being held July 22nd from noon to 4pm, at which there will also be a raffle and bake sale. They have two additional major fundraisers including their Bingo fundraiser in the Spring and Fall and their Christmas Sunday in Dundee Concert which is held the 2nd Sunday in December at the Dundee Methodist Church. The concert starts at 4 p.m. with soup and dessert being offered at the conclusion of the concert.
To join, you must be 55 years of age or older, and the center offers a wide variety of things to do. Their main focus is socialization, as often seniors no longer have a place to meet people and stay both mentally and physically active. To this end, among the activities the center offers are exercise, cards (both Euchre and Pinochle), coloring, Bible study, musical entertainment, Bingo, educational speaker presentations, and trips to the casino and sightseeing. In addition to the entertainment feature, the center provides local seniors with meals. Through the Meals on Wheels program, the center serves from 50 to 90 meals to seniors throughout the week.
The Dundee Area Senior Citizen Center is located at 284 West Monroe Street in Dundee. For more information you can contact the center at (734) 529-2401.
