The July 2017 Male Athlete of the Month is 17-year-old Austin Gabriel. Austin plays football for Dundee High School. He states that he loves playing football with his friends and especially the “awesome camaraderie” among the players at school. When he is not playing football, he also plays baseball.
Austin is Football Captain, was 2016 Special Teams Player of the Year at Dundee High School, All LCAA 1st Team Returner for 2016, and holds the school record for Average Kickoff Return Yardage in a season.
U of M is Austin’s favorite school and the Detroit Lions are his favorite team. Although he has not solidified his future plans as of yet, he states that he would love to play college football. Currently, his favorite school subject is Science because he likes experiments. With a GPA of 3.66, he will do well in whatever he undertakes.
Austin lives with his mom, dad and two brothers. His mother states, “I just want him to have fun and do what he loves. We are proud of him.” Coach McElvany says that “His leadership abilities are what you want from a student athlete. He has the potential to be one of the best natural athletes I’ve ever worked with.”
When asked to provide advice to other students considering entering a sports program Austin stated, “Try something you haven’t done before. Do as much as you can. You don’t have much time in high school”.
