ETERNITY MATTERS: IF A BIRD LOSES ITS WING, HOW CAN IT SOAR?

By Norma Shull Smith

July is a very important month to me; Our first child and only son was born in July, as was our first and only grandson and granddaughter, not to mention, the birth of the nation I love. As I thought about what to write, I couldn’t help but think of birthing. When we think of birthing anything, regardless if it is a baby, animal, a business, or a nation, one commonality is a lot of labor is involved.
Labor is often intense and painful; one pushes, struggles, sweats, and feels the pain, but we who have birthed know that once the baby is here, once the business is seeing the fruit of its labor, once the nation is thriving, every bit of fiber put into the process is something most of us would all do over again.
As I thought deeper and deeper about how much I love my children, grandchildren and nation, I realized that when we love, we would never do anything to tear down or divide. As I read the following quote by John Patterson: “Remember, the “Left Wing,” and the “Right Wing”, belong to the SAME BIRD,” I couldn’t help but think “WOW, .does that make a lot of common sense! It also made me realize that those who love our country, is without intention, slowly dividing our nation all for the sake of thinking one wing is more important than the other. Our opinions have made us forget the bird that wants to soar!
It is as if we didn’t like what our child or grandchild does and because we don’t like it, we begin to rip them in half, right down the middle and of course we wouldn’t do that, because our love keeps us level headed. Jesus Himself gives the answer in Matthew 12:25 when he said, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” This scripture was given because the Pharisees in the land argued against the power of God. In Romans 13:1-2 we are instructed to be subject to the rulers over us. We in America are fortunate to have Presidential Term Limits, with elections by the people. You may not be pleased with the elected, but every election gives opportunity and meantime, we are to respect and sit under that rule of government. If we read and listen to all the negative, we will birth negative in our spirits; however if we choose to believe the best about a person or situation, we will birth positive.
There is nothing worse than seeing a new business who is trying hard to get organized and adjusted, judged by people who have been there one or two times. It is removing a wing.
What if someone bullies your child or grandchild? Are we as a nation at this very moment not acting just like those bullies? Our prayer should be that we grown-ups wait in the waiting room of life and realize that a birthing is taking place…let us wait with excitement and anticipation, even if we can’t fathom or vision what is happening, or the outcome, because the one giving birth is experiencing hard labor and needs both wings, and family standing strong. I guess it all boils down to the Golden Rule, “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them.” Matthew 7:12 Eternity Matters!
