Female Athlete of the Month: Sophie Moccio

Sophie Moccio

By Balinda Zimmerman

Sophie Moccio was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Livonia, March 2001 to Craig and Kerri Moccio, both from upstate New York. After they married, Craig took a job as a Ford Engineer and they moved to Canton and later York Township where the family currently resides.
Sophie has gone to Milan schools her whole life, as did her sister Abbie. Sophie follows her sister in her sports interests of track and cross-country. She began running cross-country in third grade and running for Milan track team in about 7th grade.
Craig, a Ford engineer, played High school baseball and was an accomplished javelin thrower. Kerri is a Reading Specialist at Bedford Elementary and played High school softball. It was only natural that both Moccio girls are seeking advanced classes and involved in sports just as their parents were. Last year was the first year for Sophie as a flag corp. member because she was also a marching band member and was unable to do both at the same time. As a current member of the wind ensemble she had the opportunity to participate in flag during the football games and then switch over to competition band after football season ended.  She credits her sister and her friend Rebecca for encouraging her to join flag corp.
Sophie is also a dedicated runner and runs the 4 by 4 Relay, the 4 by 8 Relay the 800 and the Mile. She agrees she is best at the mile where she medaled in Regional’s. She has also been a cross-country runner since she was in 3rd grade and likes to run the 5k where she is currently competitive at the Regional levels.
Sophie and mom, Kerri, enjoy watching Forensic Files on TV and she credits the show for her intense interest in law and biology. She feels that forensic pathology might be a good fit for her and is hoping her academics and community service will earn her a shot into University of Michigan just as her sister did.
In the 2016-17 school year Sophie studied AP Biology, AP U.S. History, Spanish, Honors English, Advanced Algebra, Chemistry, and Wind Ensemble. She will continue her advanced classes in 2017-18 with AP Chemistry, AP Language and Composition, Honors Physic and Wind Ensemble.
She is an avid community service volunteer with a resume that reads like a who’s who in Milan community service. Sophie is a member of the MHS Student Council, Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association volunteer and a freshman orientation volunteer. In the community she is a member of the Milan Youth Council (her sister was a founding member), Aid in Milan Food Pantry volunteer, and the Milan Library Summer Reading Program volunteer.
