Tyler Helzerman

By Balinda Zimmerman
Tyler Helzerman was born January 2003 to Chuck and Jenni Helzerman.  He has two older sisters, Danielle ((20) and Mickayla (17), both graduated from Milan High School.  The family has a boxer named Diesel whom Tyler calls his younger brother. Anyone who knows Diesel knows Diesel thinks he is a human. The family also has a bearded dragon named Onyx and recently lost their rabbit to a stroke.
Tyler has played baseball (10 yrs), football (3 yrs), basketball (3 yrs), and this year is a member of the MHS tennis team. He was also in Boy Scout Troop 449 under Scoutmaster Melvin Fuller. He began playing T-ball at the age of 4 and still loves playing baseball every year. He lost interest in football at about the 6th grade and until this year has not participated in a fall outdoor sport. He says he enjoys tennis but he is not very good at it yet since he just started. He is doing liftin g to strengthen and tone his body in hopes of it making him stronger to play better.
Tyler likes to play video games just like most 13 year old males but he is also an avid lover of all things glamping (glamorous camping with a TV and electronics). The family has a travel trailer they purchased about ten years ago and they try to camp quite a bit in the summers. They recently returned from two weeks in the Upper Peninsula and Tahquamenon Falls and will be traveling to Holly for the Renaissance Festival over Labor Day weekend.
The whole family enjoys Renaissance Festivals and Tyler specifically enjoys them because he loves history and learning about World War II. Tyler finished middle school with an A-B Honor roll status and expects to do the same in high school. He is interested in becoming a high school science teacher and is planning on starting with the ECA fast track and continuing on to his mother’s alma mater, Eastern Michigan University, for his degree.
Tyler says he is quite shy when it comes to social situations because he has a speech impediment that causes him to get nervous talking to strangers. Once he gets to know someone he is quite friendly. Tyler has been described as “respectful, kind, helpful,
easy going, and a hard worker.” He is also an experienced corn hole partner, loves all animals, cooking and even acting.  He works well alone or with a team.
At MMS Tyler was in the plays Aladdin and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. In Aladdin he played the part of The Executioner and in Willy Wonka he played Augustus Gloop (the chubby little kid who was first to disappear). He says he really enjoys acting and will likely continue acting throughout high school.
