Relay for Life: Fighting for a Cure

Milan Eagle

Once again Milan came together for the Relay for Life in Wilson Park. Saturday morning, August 25, 2017 the motorcycles rolled in to the cheers of the crowd gathered to walk together and fight for a cure for cancer. After the opening ceremony the Boy Scouts led in a pledge to the flag and survivors started lining up for the traditional Survivor Lap ending at the Senior Center where a huge breakfast, catered by The Produce Station in Ann Arbor awaited them and their caregivers. Brooklyn Sidetrack provided the drinks, coffee and juice, and Dr. Eduardo Enriquez and Milan Physical Therapy sponsored the breakfast, of frittatas, pastries, fruit, yogurt and more. Dawn Smith-Divert, guest speaker, shared her story as a cancer survivor. Milan Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts served and provided special assistance to those that had a need.
Twenty one teams were registered, slightly less than last year. Night before the breakfast they had raised $30,000 of the goal they set for this overnight Relay of $60,000.
Various themed laps continued throughout the day and evening. As darkness settled in, hundreds of luminaria bags lit up the path throughout the camp as walkers remembered those that lost their fight and those that continue to fight.
Morning came and across the park rose the smell of coffee, sausage and pancakes, Milan Rotarians were continuing their tradition of feeding those that had made it through the night.
