The Milan Rotary Club partnered with local pizza stores, Hungry Howies and Marcos Pizza on World Polio Day, October 24th to raise money for Rotary’s efforts to make Polio the second deadly disease eradicated from the face of the earth, the first being Small Pox.  Not only did the club enjoy the best pizzas in Southeast Michigan, but they also enjoyed an educational program on the history of Polio, Rotary’s involvement and where we are at today, by PDG Jim Gilmore IV.
The Pizza4Polio Campaign was a huge success as many companies and families participated by making October 24th, Pizza Day in Milan.  Marcos and Hungry Howies graciously donated a portion of each pizza sale to the End Polio Now Campaign.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has partnered with Rotary International and has matched each dollar raised by Rotary, 3 to 1, so each dollar raised = $3 towards the fight to eradicate polio.   And Rotary is “this Close” to crossing the finish line as of October 24, 2017 there were 12 cases of Polio reported in two countries, compared to 350,000 each year in 1985 when Rotary took on this effort.
