Swim and dive team gives back

By Balinda Zimmerman

Tuesday, October 24, 2017 was great for the Milan Big Reds Swim and Dive Team as they took on the New Boston Huron/Flat Rock team. The Big Reds walked away with the win but to some in the stands that was not the best thing that happened that evening.
It was Senior Night for the team and the five graduating seniors for the 2018 class determined to do something to give back to the community that has supported them for many years. Haylie Ritchie, Kaitlyn Fellhauer, Alexis Fetterolf, Madelyn Cislo, and Alayna Humes chose to purchase pink swim caps and raise breast cancer awareness by collecting donations from those wishing to sign the pink hats. Monies collected would eventually be donated to such organizations as Susan G. Komen and Making Strides Foundation.
Haylie Ritchie choose to donate her monies to local breast cancer patient, Shannon McCray Jenkins. Shannon is an employee of the Milan fire department and has been fighting her personal battle with breast cancer since May of this year. Shannon has been undergoing treatments all summer, just completed her last round of chemotherapy and is now beginning radiation treatments.
Haylie Ritchie wanted to show her support by sending Shannon on a date with her husband, Sean, to dinner and a movie or a weekend get-away. Locals hearing of Haylie’s desire to do something for Shannon contributed well to the cause. Haylie presented Shannon with flowers and a card containing the monies and both promptly burst into tears along with quite a few others in the crowd.
With the win over NB/FR the Big Reds moved to 10-2 for the season and 3-0 in the Huron League. After their win over SMCC on Thursday, October 26, 2017 Coach Heikka reported in an email, “This puts our final dual meet record at 11-2 on the year, and extended our Huron League dual unbeaten streak to 18 years.” Congratulations to the Big Red Ladies Swim and Dive Team for their 18th year as Huron Champions.
