Cooking up some holiday fun with Paddock students

By Joyce Ervin

Chef and cooking instructor, Ann Racette, for Cooking Club is having her little chefs celebrate traditional holiday foods and fun through the months of November and December at Symons and Paddock Elementary Schools.  The program is offered by the Community Education Department.
First up was a history and cooking lesson on Hanukkah.  Little chefs made Hanukkah Sufganiyot which translates to jelly filled doughnuts made with canned biscuits.
Youngsters placed the biscuits in hot oil and fried them until they floated.  They were then poked with a wooden object and either raspberry or strawberry jelly was squeezed into them.  Little hands sprinkled powdered sugar from a shaker over the pastry and followed with lots of ‘yums’.
Siblings Dahlia and Milo Tehner both Jewish told the story of Hanukkah to the group causing Racette to say, “They did a great job explaining it as one kid would to another; very understandable.”
When you weren’t eating and munching or frying, the chefs played a traditional game of Dreidel.  They used chocolate candy kisses for the tokens needed for the ‘pot’
.Kenleiga Vandergrift, a second-grader in Lisa Griffith’s class at Paddock Elementary School was delighted with the session.  She played the game several times, memorized the religious significance of the holiday and said, “I’m going to ask my mom if we can’t celebrate this holiday next year.”
Next Racette said they would be cooking a traditional dish that would be served at a Kwanzaa feast and the same for the Christmas holiday.  They will finish this session with a class New Year’s Eve party on December 14.
For the New Year celebration, Racette said, the students will come to class immediately after school.  Families are invited to join them at 4:15 for appetizers and punch created by the Paddock Cooking Club chefs.
