Female athlete of the month: Mackenzie Crawford

Mackenzie Crawford

By Balinda Zimmerman

Mackenzie Crawford was born to Mary Blevins Crawford and Michael Crawford at U-M Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She arrived along with her twin brother Ethan in February 2001, joining an older brother, Patrick, and older sister, Christina.
Mackenzie began taking an interest in gymnastics and diving around the age of five and by age nine she had decided on her sport and was ready to make a commitment to competitive diving. She had experience and was comfortable in the competitive culture because Patrick had been a competitive diver going all the way to the State level and the family traveled to all the meets to support him.
Mackenzie has won numerous awards for her diving as early as 7th grade when she set a school record and then broke it in 8th grade. She won the Eastern National Championship at age 13, Diver of the Year in 2010 and 2014 and has set and broken her own diving records and pool records at Milan. At the 2017 State meet held in Ann Arbor Mackenzie once again faced her competitors with courage and determination and walked away as a two-time State winner for DIII Diving.
In 2016 Mackenzie earned the titles of DIII State Diving Champion, Diver of the Year, and was a competitor in Regional and Zone competitions for her diving club. During 2017, she has repeated all of the same awards while being a captain on the MHS team. She will continue to train for the Regional, Zone competitions coming up soon, and hopes to make it all the way to Nationals this time around.
She has a dream of being a competitive diver in the Olympics one day and she is well on her way to making it there with her diving this year. This season, 2017, Mackenzie broke the MHS pool 6 Dive record with a 324.30 beating out MHS diver Haley Feeman who set the record in 2013. She then broke her own record from last year for the 11 Dive, setting a new score of 478.30.
Mackenzie is currently enrolled in the Early College Alliance (ECA) program at Eastern Michigan University where she is studying Calc 1, ATM (Cultural and Sociology), and Anthropology. Next semester she will study Calc 2, Physics, and Abnormal Psychology which she looks forward to studying. When she finishes high school, she will have an accumulated sixty credits to apply toward her Bachelors or Masters Degree. She is presently looking at Ohio State, Perdue, Indiana, Michigan and even Duke for her college choices and would like to study genetics.
This year for the Legacy club, Mackenzie will begin diving on the 10-meter tower platform. She has been platform diving since she was nine but was held back from the 10 meter due to age requirements for the higher towers and then later injuries. After her previous injury, she credits the Ann Arbor Brain and Spine Center, and physical therapist Andrew Marsh for staying with her long enough to find out what she needed to do to repair her back pain that was holding her back from her best efforts.
Something many people do not know about Mackenzie is that she likes Marvel comics, DC toys, Superman, and everything Comic Con and Cos Play. She and her brother Ethan go with their father to San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) every year where her father goes to promote his blog and collect more toys. Michael runs MWCTOYS where he reviews toys for different companies before release to the public.
The Eagle typically features seniors during the school year but State record holders are exceptions to the rule and we wish Mackenzie the best of luck continuing her high school diving career and beyond.
