When 16 year old Maddie Schmidt tried out for the volleyball team during her sophomore year, the swim and dive coach suggested she try out. Since then, the Dundee Community High School student has been an avid participant in diving She has been diving for Dundee for two years and states that she has “fallen in love with diving and has never looked back”. She also participates in Track and Field, but diving is her true love.
Maddie’s favorite subject in school is Independent Art because, as she states, she “gets to pick her own projects and expand on her creativity”.
While maintaining a 3.95 GPA, in addition to her commitment to sports Maddie is in the Dundee High School Band and Color Guard, Junior Class Treasurer and Band Council Vice President.
Maddie lives in Dundee with her parents, Kathrynn and Tom Thompson and their two dogs, a Golden Retriever and a Maltese. She also has two sisters attending Dundee Schools; 15 year old Sophomore, Kate and 13 year old Lily in Dundee Middle School.
Plans for the future include attending either Oakland University or Michigan State University and pursuing a degree in Education so that she will be able to attain her goal of teaching art.
When asked her advice to students thinking of joining a sport in school, Maddie stated that you should try a variety of sports because she never knew the one she tried would end up being her favorite sport.
Mrs. Roggelin, who teaches Spanish at Dundee High School states, “Madelynn is an outstanding student whose personality shines every day in class. She is truly a pleasure to have in class.”
Maddie’s parents say, “We couldn’t be more proud of Maddie for trying a new sport and her diving accomplishments. Over the past two seasons her love for diving was obvious from the beginning, and we are excited for her senior year.”
