Age 76, died Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at his home in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He was born on February 27, 1941 in Milan, Michigan to Stephen and Mary (Balog) Smith. On December 29, 1962 he married Beverly Devitt and she survives.
Ed attended Dundee High School. He then worked for Frank J. Siller Construction until venturing on his own, establishing Edward S. Smith Contractor Inc., which he owned and operated until retiring in 1999. Ed enjoyed the outdoors, sitting around bonfires, snowmobiling up north, and spending time at home with his family.
Ed was known as “Papa” by his grandchildren and he absolutely loved them more than anything in the world. He also looked forward to the Milan Coffee Group and for several years he and Beverly wintered in Florida.
Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Debra Smith of Milan and Diane (John) Wheeler-Schmidt of Saline, five grandchildren, Amber Ashley, Kyle, Konner and Kollin Wheeler and Caleb Schmidt, two great grandchildren, Carter and Ella Ashley, and one sister, Lillian Blakely of Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, John Smith, Jack and Robert Szabo.
Friends may call at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan on Friday, December 29th from 4:00-8:00pm and on Saturday, December 30th from 10:00am until time of funeral service at 11:00am. Contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association.
