TALK:Text and Learn Kindergarten program

Jennifer Perryman

Milan Public Library is partnering with Ypsilanti District Library to introduce TALK: Text and Learn for Kindergarten. TALK is a new text messaging service which will send texts to parents of children under the age of five providing easy, age-appropriate activities to do with their children at home to build early literacy skills and contribute to school success.
Research shows that talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing every day with your child contributes to success in school and in life. TALK will send two text messages each week with suggestions for activities that can be done at home with no special materials.
Life can be busy and TALK texts provide quick and easy ways for parents to incorporate fun learning opportunities into their daily life. During bath time, drop toys in the water and talk about how they sink or float. Sing the alphabet song while washing hands. Play I Spy. These are just a few of the suggested activities.
TALK texts are available to all parents, and are especially valuable for parents who may not be able to attend library or other community programs. The TALK service will send ideas directly to parents’ cell phones.
Parents and caregivers of children under the age of five can sign up to receive TALK texts by texting TALK to 77453 or filling out the form online at Parents will be asked to enter their zip code (to receive messages for activities in their area) and their child’s birth date (to receive age-specific texts). Two birth dates may be entered so parents with children in two age groups (baby, toddler, and preschool) can receive texts specific to each child’s age group.
This program is for families in Washtenaw County. Milan Public Library families may also participate, regardless of county residence. Please contact the library (734-439-1240 or info [at] milanlibrary [dot] org) for information about how to sign up if you live outside of Washtenaw County.
The Ypsilanti District Library is coordinating the program, in partnership with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, the Washtenaw Intermediate School District, Success by Six, Washtenaw Literacy, the Children’s Literacy Network, and the libraries of Dexter, Milan, Northfield Township, and Saline. This project is funded (in part) with a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Library of Michigan.
