Milan resident and Bedford Elementary School teacher, Kerri Moccio hit the lotto for a $1,500 cash prize recently given for an Excellence in Education award along with a $500 grant for her classroom from the Michigan Lottery.
Moccio is known closer to home for her book project, Book Fairy Pantry Project, through Aid in Milan, where children can take home books each week to build a private library.
A similar project on a grander scale is implemented for her first-grade students. The summer reading program she initiated gave students 28 books each to take home and the collection was near 20,000 books.
Fox News interviewed her in Detroit, Saginaw, Grand Rapids and Lansing.  Not enough can be said for the projects, programs, networking, facilitating and teaching this lady does.  Look for another article soon highlighting more of her achievements in future issues of the Milan Eagle News.
What this teacher brings to her students is priceless.  What drives her?  She said in an interview with Fox News, “My love of reading led her to a career in education.  “I have always been an avid reader and had some wonderful language arts teachers growing up.  That love for reading and for books is something that I knew I wanted to instill in others.”
Here is what it takes to hit the book collecting lottery.
Outstanding public-school educators may be nominated for an Excellence in Education award at http://bit.ly/ExcellenceInEducation or through the websites of the Lottery’s media partner stations.
Excellence in Education award nominees are evaluated on the following criteria:
Excellence – Their work consistently helps students and/or their schools or school districts advance to higher levels of academic achievement.
Dedication – They consistently go above and beyond expectations to help students succeed.
Inspiration – Their work inspires others around them to exceed expectations either academically or professionally.
Moccio’s win is a win for Milan and kids across Michigan!
