Big Reds come back from deficit to beat Grosse Ile

By Joel Dotson

The month of April for the Milan Big Reds varsity baseball squad was full of ups and downs. The Big Reds ended the 2018 campaign’s opening month with a come-from-behind victory over Huron League rival Grosse Ile, defeating the Red Devils 10-5 on April 30.
A six-run 4th inning was the catalyst for the victory. Over the course of the frame, the Big Reds tallied four singles and also had three walks. Trailing 4-1 at the time, Dustin Dapprich’s leadoff single opened the surge. Following a strikeout, single, fielder’s choice, and back-to-back walks – the latter of which scored the first run of the stanza for Milan – Jaden Riling tied the game with a two-run single. Justin Beck, two batters after Riling, gave the Big Reds the lead with a two-run base-knock of his own. Riley Bergeron would score on a wild pitch in the next at-bat, extending Milan’s lead to 7-4.
Grosse Ile narrowed the lead to 7-5 on a two-out single in the top of the 5th, but Milan answered with three insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Big Reds totaled nine hits over the 7-inning match.
Milan ended April with a 9-6 overall record, going 3-4 in Huron League play. As a team, the Big Reds combined for a .268 batting average over the month’s 15 games. On the pitching side, the squad’s eight pitchers combined for a 2.04 ERA.
At the time of this writing, the Big Reds have 18 games to play in May, seven of which are in conference play. Barring contests rescheduled due to weather, the home regular season finale – which is also Senior Night – is set to be on May 21 against Flat Rock. The regular season is set to end with a road game against Tecumseh on May 29.
Milan will play at Adrian High School when district playoffs roll around; the other teams in the district are Adrian, Ida, Onsted and Tecumseh. The date it will take place – June 1 or 2 – has not been determined yet.
