Big Reds kick off first game of season

By Balinda Zimmerman

The Milan Big Reds kicked off their first game of the season against Bridgeport after driving nearly two hours with both JV and Varsity teams for back-to-back games on Friday, August 24, 2018.
The Varsity Big Reds took a 34-6 lead heading into the third quarter and were then able to put their second string players in for a bit of experience, an unusual occurrence for the first game of the season. Bridgeport defense was reportedly quite strong in spite of the low score reflected on their side of the board in the first half.
When Milan put in their second string, the Bridgeport offense was able to come back and garner a few scores to make it a more balanced game. All in all, it was a great experience for both the starters and the backups for Milan.
For the Big Reds, Quarterback, Dyllan Jones, reportedly completed ten out of fourteen total passes and grabbed a short run touchdown score. TE/WR Evan Furtney made a phenomenal one-handed catch to grab a first down. DB/WR Duane Bartnicki came out strong and had two interceptions with one called back for penalty, and he reportedly played strong defense as well. Richard Arecheja also played strong and garnered an interception in his first game back after being out of play last year due to injuries.
OL/DL Chris Beck led the field in offensive yardage with a total of 357 yards and also grabbed a short kick-off return for a 10 yard gain. RB/WR Tristan Hines lead the team in rushing with 73 yards and 57 receiving with two touchdowns while Hunter Aeschbacker was right behind him at 72 yards going into the half. Hunter caught a screen pass and broke a key tackle then finished the night with a reported 95 yards rushing and 35 receiving on 20 total carries.
All in all the Big Reds are looking strong and the fans are excitedly looking forward to a fantastic season for 2018
