Starting early on his dream to become a journalist and sports reporter, seven-year-old, Franklin Barker, has hit the big time already, with an opportunity to interview a University of Michigan basketball player, Iggy Brazdeikis,
Franklin entered the contest to be a Junior Reporter sponsored by U of M Athletics Department and Wolverine Human Services, who held online auditions.  Franklin said, “We got the email with suggestions of what to ask, and my dad filmed me asking the questions.”
Upon finding out his assignment, Franklin looked over sports magazines and researched questions asked of professional players.  For his audition, he asked, “How did you make that 3-pointer and did you use math?”
Franklin beat out about 100 applicants.  The Paddock Elementary second-grader will have his video shown during the game between the Wolverines and Western Michigan University Broncos on Dec. 15 at Crisler Center.
What question did he ask of Brazdeikis on the video?  Franklin said, “I asked him what his favorite cartoon was.”  Of course, we will have to wait for the answer in our next edition after the video is aired.
Franklin said his favorite subject in school is writing.  “I write non-fiction,” he said.
When he isn’t writing, he enjoys sports.  His favorite sport is football, but that didn’t dampen his enthusiasm for interviewing a basketball player.
He is the son of Jennifer and Craig Barker of Milan.
