OBITUARY: John Katona


Belleville, MI

Age 91, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 10, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 8, 1928 in Montgomery, Michigan to Ignace and Elizabeth (Papp) Katona. John served in the U.S. army during the Korean conflict. Upon returning home he continued his employment with Ford Motor Company until his retirement.
John, having grown up in a family who loved and respected horses began to raise horses for show. He started with POA ponies and gradually home-bred Appaloosa horses, which he proudly entered into competition. John’s love for horses was evident by his care and breeding, which won him multiple state champions. He also raised German Shepherds. Encouraged by his granddaughter he attended dog obedient classes with her and his daughter-in-law. Together they showed their dogs in which they won many medals. He enjoyed the outdoors and has a passion for cultivating flowers. He spent endless hours attending to his lawn and garden. Those who passed by were in awe of how beautiful and immaculate his lawn was kept. John lived his life honest, happy and with no regrets.
John is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Tim and Cindy Katona, his daughter and son-in-law Pam and Mike Melton all of Belleville, a granddaughter Melissa Colwell, a grandson Matt (Victoria) Melton, four great-grandchildren Brian and Luke Colwell and twins Alina and Mira Melton, and two sisters Bertha Hartmann and Margaret Katona.
He was preceded in death his parents, four brothers Ignace “Iggy”, Peter, Kelly and Anton “Tony” Katona, and three sisters Helen Kondor, Theresa Shaw and Anna Hansen.
Visitation will be held at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan on Sunday, October 13, 2019 from 4:00-8:00 pm where funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00am. followed by full military honors. Private burial will follow at Marble Park Cemetery at a later date. Those desiring may make contributions to the Milan Garden Club or the Belleville Garden Club. Envelopes will be available at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan.
