By Norma Shull Smith

As I was lying in bed and looking around my room, I couldn’t help but notice all the doors in my room. Not everyone has 5 doors in a bedroom, but I have one to a walk-in closet, one to the Master Bath, two folding doors to another wall closet, and the door that leads out of the bedroom.
It was just after Christmas several decades ago, when we got word that the home of my husband’s secretary had burned to the ground.
That in itself is devastating, but worse than losing her home and every belonging, her 10 year-old son, was trapped in the upstairs. His mama tried with all her might to reach him, to no avail.
Looking at all those doors in my room, brought so many memories rushing back through my spirit about that fire.
Elementary Schools often have programs where firefighters come to the school and give short lessons to children showing what to do in case of fire.
If a child was in my house with 5 doors in their bedroom, would they choose to go hide in a closet thinking that was their safety? Or, would they take the door that leads out, hoping and praying they make it out?
As I thought about this memory of so long ago, God placed on my heart that everyday people choose the wrong doors in life, instead of the door that leads to life.
Revelation 3:8 says, “‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.”
John 10:9: “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.”
John 3:16-17: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
The last scripture tells of God’s great love for everyone and he does not want anyone to perish by choosing a wrong door in life. My prayer for you is that in 2020 if you have not been living life for your Eternal Destination that you close that door and enter through the only one that guarantees Heaven, the door of Jesus Christ!
Eternity Matters
