Noah Salhaney, MHS senior, was born on January 15th, 2002 in Ypsilanti. He has lived in Milan and attended Milan Area Schools since 2nd grade. His mom is Tracy and his dad is Jason and he has one sister, she attends Michigan State University.
For as long as he can remember Noah’s been interested in sports. He started playing soccer at the age of 3 and has played multiple other sports since then including basketball and baseball. He recalls watching Michael Phelps in the 2012 Summer Olympics when he was in 5th grade and he immediately had his mom sign him up for the Milan Swim Club. That was when he found the sport that he would stick with. Noah began swimming competitively year-round and was a member of the Milan Middle School swim team for three years. During this time, he met Coach Heikka who is the key to Milan High School’s dominance over nearby schools for the past 15 to 20 years. Noah said, “Coach Heikka has taught me the value of pushing myself to be the best I can possibly be both in and out of the pool.”
Noah is currently in his fourth season on the Milan High School Men’s Swim and Dive team, and this is his 8th year of swimming for Milan. He is one of three captains along with Kaden Baker and Evan Kolar. He said, “we are, so far, undefeated in dual meets and our signature win so far was vs. the 4X defending state champions of Division 2, Dexter High School. That win has set the tone for the remainder of the season and it was one more checkbox on our list of goals for the season. This year we are seeking to win our second straight Monroe County Meet Championship along with our third SMISL meet championship in four years.”
Noah enjoys the opportunity to be a leader on this team because it allows him to share his own knowledge with the younger members of the team. This will be his last season of competitive swimming after which he plans on walking off into the sunset with his fellow seniors Kaden Baker, Evan Kolar, and Jared Mercieca.
Noah is a member of the Varsity Track and Field and Cross Country teams at Milan. Most recently, the cross-country team won the 2019 Huron League Championship. He is also a part of the school’s robotics team 5567 Code Red Robotics. They are currently in their building the robot part of the season and will begin competing in March. Noah takes his studies very seriously and the most recent semester he had a 4.429 GPA. Next fall Noah will be attending his dream school, The University of Michigan Ann Arbor, and he hopes to pursue a business degree at the Ross School of Business or a degree in Economics from the College of Literature, Science, and Arts.
“I have the perfect young man (for athlete of the month), Noah Salhaney. Great student and great athlete,” said Coach Daniel Heikka.
