Girls Swimming Team Wins 2012 SMISL Championship

Milan won the 2012 SMISL Championships to claim the title for the 2nd straight year. Tecumseh’s Rachel Waite won swimmer of the meet and Milan coach Dan Heikka was 2012 Coach of the year.

Milan was lead by their seniors. Lauren Cook claimed the 200 free, was runner up in the 100 free and was part of the winning 400 and 2nd place 200 free relays. Becca Weil was 4th in the 200 free, 2nd in the 500 and was also part of the winning 400 and 2nd place 200 free relays. Samantha Leacher had a great meet scoring well in the 50 free and 100 breast, as well as being part of a key medley relay team. Becky Anguilm was part of the B medley relay and claimed 8th in the 100 back. Paige Stefan dove fabulous to take 4th.

Diving got us off to a great start with Haley Feeman winning and diving great, while Taylor Hoesein was 2nd, Paige 4th and Danielle Osborne taking 12th place. The divers allowed us to come in ahead to swimming portion and they were great.

The key to our win was the total team commitment and team attitude. We scored 3 or 4 girls in every event and our depth really carried us.

We had over 30 best times and splits on the day, as a team we performed great.

This finished off a great season for most of our kids. This group of girls has been a tremendous group, from their attitude and work ethic to how they performed under pressure.

“I am tremendously proud of them and to be their coach”, said Coach Heikka.

This article is according to FB info from Coach Heikka. No doubt the team is proud of their coach as well. After all he is 2012 Coach of the Year. Congratulations Girls Swim Team and Coach Heikka!
