Veteran of the Month: James K. Ryckman

Sgt. James K. Ryckman, son of Dana and Wilma Ryckman,  was raised in Milan.  He graduated from Milan High School in 1997.

The U.S. Army Training Center in Fort Jackson, S. C. became his “home away from home” in 2007 when he went to Basic Training.  His 1st AIT (Advanced Individual Training) for Generator Mechanic was at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland the same year.  The following year, his 2nd AIT for Combat Medic was at Fort Sam Houston, TX.  James 1st duty station was Fort Hood, TX  from 2007-2010.  He was with 4th BD, 4 Special Troops  Battalion – 1st Calvary Division as a Generator Mechanic and a Combat Medic.  It was during this time he was deployed to Iraq where he was with Infantry/Military Police Combat, Medic 1st Cavalry Division.

After his return to the States, James 2nd duty station was U. S. Army Yuma Proving Ground in Yuma, AZ from 2010-2012.   James (Healthcare NCO) provided medical coverage for Special Forces Freefall School (Weed Army Hospital)  and patient care for dependents and soldiers on base (USA Health Clinic).  Training included Medical coverage for Special Operation Air Combat Controller Course and Laboratory Controller.

Leaving AZ, Sgt. Ryckman’s 3rd duty station was Fort Campbell Kentucky at the 86th Combat Support Hospital.  Treatment Platoon Squad Leader, Mass Causality Decontamination, Unit Armor, Unit Movement Officer, Airload Planner Operation course and Hazmat Certifier.

Awards received by Sgt. Ryckman include Army Commendation Medal x2, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal x2, Non-commissioned Officer Development x2, Overseas Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Ribbon 2 stars, Army Service Metal and Expert Marksmanship Badge.

Sgt. Ryckman has a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences Concentration in Healthcare Mgmt./Trident University, EMT-B, CPR, Hazmat Certifier-49CR.  He retired from the Army this year and is attending ITT Tech, Associates in Science Network Administration and working in Detroit at Imaging Advantage, Detroit Medical Center.
