We at the Milan Eagle hope all in our community are doing well during this crisis. We will all get through this together. In order to keep people safe and distanced we did not produce a Milan Eagle newspaper for April. Further months have not been determined as we want to adhere to state guidelines and protect the community. We appreciate all our advertisers and readers and look forward to serving everyone again.God bless.

An important new tool available to Milan residents and businesses that was just implemented is Smart911.  Smart911 is a free service to citizens where they can create a personal profile account on-line.

Once a personal profile account is created, anytime a 911 call is made from the telephone number associated with that account, all of the information that was inputted into that profile is immediately made available to the 911 call taker on a computer screen in the Dispatch Center.

Photographs, maps, floor plans, a list of occupants residing in a house, emergency contact information, medical information, allergies, contact information for key holders, business floor plans, and the existence of hazardous materials are just some examples of what can  inputted into the personal profile.

This service was implemented into the City of Milan Police Department’s Dispatch Center in November.

Often, when someone is under the stress of an emergency situation, they may not be thinking as clearly as they might be when not under the pressure of the moment.

Planning ahead and inputting information that you would want the 911 Dispatcher to be aware of could greatly assist emergency responders more effectively and efficiently handle your emergency.

Mayor Armitage took the lead in assuring Milan was the first dispatch center in southeast Michigan to provide this important service to our citizens.

I would encourage all of our citizens and businesses to log into Smart911.com and learn about this service, as well as create a profile.  Your personal data is safe and is not retrievable by anyone.  It only becomes viewable if you dial 911.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone all the best during the upcoming holiday season.  In the running and tendency toward commercialism, we can get buried in the to and fro, and completely miss the opportunities the season represents.

In the darkness of December we anticipate the light and hope of Christmas, while at the same time bid 2014 ado, in anticipation of new opportunities and the hopes of a new year.

May the joy of the season, especially its potential for peace and promise, faith and hope, and the dreams of children be with you.
