The Milan Mayor’s Youth Council welcomed two new members at their October 28 meeting at City Hall.  Joining are Milan High School sophomores, Julia Woelmer and Kate Frait.
Frait said she was interested in the overall program and would extend her knowledge and interest of government
Woelmer helped with the council’s recent Geo Caching event and said she was looking forward to learning more about government and how it works. Woelmer said, “I think it’s important to be involved with a group that makes decisions that impact the city.”
Agenda items, ideas and events are moving forward and were discussion items for the teens.
Chairman Kyle Snyder will attend and represent Milan at the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association Symposium scheduled for November in Detroit.
The Milan Youth Council was voted Youth Council of the Year 2015 by the MRPA. Snyder returns as a member of the state planning committee.
The council will, spearheaded by vice chair Abbie Moccio, hold two ice skating events at Wilson Park for area teens.  Plans are being set in place to proceed when weather conditions permit.
Long on their agenda is a New Year’s Eve celebration.  A study group was named to explore venue, entertainment and costs to bring the idea to fruition this year.
A visitor’s day, inviting youth to stop by the council chambers and enjoy a social hour afterward was discussed as a way to increase teen involvement and participation.
Snyder said the youth council members wished to extend their sincere condolences to recording secretary, Milan City Clerk Candy Frye on the recent death of her mother.
The purpose of the youth council is to learn the structure of government and support the community with mandatory volunteer hours.
A change of meeting times is noted.  The council will now meet at 5:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month in chambers at City Hall.
