Lady Big Reds victorious

By Balinda Zimmerman

Milan JV and Varsity volleyball teams met up with Monroe Jefferson on the Milan courts on October 12, 2016 and it was a rousing volley of competition that kept the crowd yelling throughout eight games of play. It so happened it was Senior night for the Big Reds so the stands held a healthy crowd for the games insuring the noise level would be encouraging.
The JV team met up with the Bears and promptly and efficiently laid down three wins of 25-14, 25-9, and 25-17.  It wasn’t that there was no competition it was just that the Big Reds were prepared and waiting at the line to return (with force) anything that came at them. For a JV team, these girls are a force to be reckoned with when they hit the court.
Senior night celebrated seniors Brittney Bock, Emily Mitchell, Kaityln Scheitz, Hannah Iverson, Jessica Oberhofer, and Avery Harris as parents presented them with flowers and the team gifted them each a 12×12 photo and new practice jerseys with “senior” on them.
The Varsity team didn’t win all their games but they didn’t back down with the first loss of 24-14, Jefferson.  The girls came back with a vengeance and powered through with some serious volleys that had a few in the crowd on their feet at one point. Hannah Iverson and Emily Mitchell played the net so strong that barely anything got clear of them if it was within a foot of the net.
The team pulled off a third and final win of 15-6 over Jefferson after both teams had clinched two wins each. In the fifth and final game the Big Reds had a little more stamina and enthusiasm left for the final punch required to take down the Bears.
The Lady Big Reds are still in the running for District playoffs scheduled for Nov 3rd and 4th at Jefferson High School.
