Once again family, friends and grant recipients gathered for the GMACF Grant Awards Reception and were welcomed by Chris Wetzler, President & Chairman, Grant Committee. Before announcing the award winners for the 19 grants totaling $36,446, Wetler said it would be his last awards event as President since he’s retiring from the Board at the end of March 2017. He has been President since the beginning but he’s sure Rachel Royal will transition from Treasurer to President very well to carry on leadership of The Greater Milan Area Community Foundation.
In February 2005 three of Milan’s outstanding citizens, Isabelle Schultz, Donald Harkness and Millard Phillips saw their idea, dream and passion for the community become a reality with the forming of GMACF during a meeting at Milan’s Old Fire Barn. The GMACF, working together for good for ever, has been able to give out Grants of $311, 559 since the first two were given out in 2006.
As each (non-profit group) winner was called forward and introduced, they were so very appreciative and thankful . As they spoke it was evident each group would be putting the grant money to worthwhile needs improving the community and enhancing lives of Milan’s residents.
Award winners were Aid in Milan (3), Milan Area Fire Dept. (2), Milan Children’s Preschool (2), Milan High School (2), Milan Parks & Recreation (1), Milan Public Library (2), Milan Seniors for Healthy Living (2), Milan Youth Soccer Club (1), Saline River Greenway Alliance (1), Symons Elementary (1) and Your Spot (2).
Weltzer concluded by saying it was a great year. They were able to fund most of the grants that came in. The next annual fund raiser gala will be February 25, 2017 at Eagle Crest in Ypsilanti giving everyone another opportunity to reinvest in the community. For good. For ever. 734-434-0643
