The 11th Annual GMACF Gala Fundraiser on February 25, 2017 took place at the Marriott at Eagle Crest in Ypsilanti. The glitz, glamour, and masks of green, yellow and purple set the Mardi Gras atmosphere for the crowd of 280 hungry but yet anxious bidders. After all, it is a dinner auction fundraiser. President Chris Wetzler gave a warm welcome even though bitter sweet since this was his last Gala. After serving as president for 6 years he’ll be retiring March 31, 2017.
Mission Statement: The GMACF is a permanent and growing charitable community endowment that, through a wide variety of grants and programs, serves to enhance life in our community…For good. For ever..  It all began with 3 people and their ideas, their vision and efforts to improve the city and a desire and passion to form a foundation.  Don Harkness, Isabelle Schultz and Millard Phillip were there in February 2005 when during a meeting in the historic Old Fire Barn the GMACF was formed. Such an honor to have them be a part and celebrate this 11th fundraiser! . Isabelle Schultz was the first president of GMACF.
Many grant and scholarship recipients were introduced but the most touching was Clara’s Closet. Watching the video, one couldn’t help but feel, not only the need but the passion for Clara’s Closet. Melissa Buie wanted to be a teacher since she was a child. Today she is a special needs teacher at Paddock and Clara’s Closet is named after her mother. It’s a place for children to get a pair of gloves, dry pants, a coat or maybe boots…along with encouragement, a hug and a smile. You can tell by her voice Melissa truly loves helping and caring for these children.
Numerous silent auction items were available to bid on. A tasty dinner was served, music by DJ Mike Brown was enjoyed though out the evening. Emcee Doug Strader along with auctioneer Gwen Hodges keep everyone entertained and the bids rolling in for the live auction items.
Thanks to the Chair of the Gala Planning Committee, Mayor Armitage and his committee for a fantastic job. Special thanks to all the sponsors! Without the generous support of the sponsors and the donations the Gala would not be possible.
