Fisher House: Family’s Love Is The Best Medicine

By Milan Eagle media

When most people think of the state of Michigan, they often don’t connect it with the military. Maybe this is because we are a guard and reserve state, maybe it’s because we don’t see many men and women in uniform, or even that there aren’t fighter jets regularly carving streams in the clouds. Whatever the reason, the truth is that Michigan is as storied in military tradition as anywhere in the nation. There are currently over 650,000 veterans in the state of Michigan, with the majority averaging at over 50 years of age. Many of these men and women will someday need medical care at through the VA hospital, but it isn’t just about the veteran. At Fisher House Michigan we believe that a family’s love is good medicine.
The only question is when those times come, where will the families stay?
Fisher Houses provide military families housing close to a loved one during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury. While there are over 75 operational Fisher Houses around the world, including several in Ohio alone, Michigan has none. It is time that our veterans and their families have the access to the love and care they deserve.
Our goal at Fisher House Michigan is to raise a total of $5 million, $3.5 million of which is capital funds to support the national Fisher House Foundation’s construction costs at the VA Ann Arbor site. In addition, we will raise another $1.5 million to ensure the immediate needs of Fisher House families are accommodated so their only focus is on helping their Veteran heal.
Fisher House Foundation has a Charity Navigator rating of 4 out of 4 stars over the past 13 years and is one of only three military charities which Charity Watch rates an A+. As a Michigan-based community foundation supporting Fisher House Foundation, our goal at FHM is to emulate this model of exceptional stewardship of the donor dollar.
