Milan Rotary Club started off early serving the community Saturday April 28 when they joined others downtown for Milan Community Clean Up Day. After cleaning the alley, along the side where the old bakery was, a couple of Rotarians stayed behind to cook hotdogs and food for volunteers, while the others headed over to Tri-County to set up for the Kentucky Derby Dinner, a fundraiser, taking place in the evening.
Men in colorful bowties and women in fluffy hats soon arrived. Some purchased beads for the “heads and tails” game, winner left standing collected 50% of the total amount collected for the game. Some purchased cards as part of the 52 Card Game for a chance to win a $500 Mastercard. This is the one place where tables get excited if they are dismissed last to eat because it also means the table collects 50% of monies collected hoping to be last to eat. Live auction items and silent auction items were up for bid as well as horses. Can’t have a Kentucky Derby without horses! Three races followed, six horses in each race. The winner of each race had to spin and land exactly on the 10th space…winning 50% of the original horse auction entry for their race. Earlier in the planning stages for this event there were 50 raffle tickets sold at $50 each to win a $1200 Travel Voucher. This is a reverse raffle so the suspense is carried throughout the evening. Last number remaining, gold trophy cup, lucky winner this evening for the reverse raffle was a surprised and happy Gwen Hodges.
Rotary proceeds from this event go back into the community and the world. Rotarians, neighbors, friends and problem solvers share ideas, join leaders and take action to create lasting change…promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children so they can live and grow stronger, supporting education and carrying out projects that enhance economic and community development.
