Leaving it all on the Field

By Ann Raubuch

The Milan Softball team’s season came to a close June 11th. Districts were hosted by Adrian this season. The Big Reds won game one by run rule in five innings 14-2 and advanced to the District Championship against Tecumseh. Tecumseh’s line-up included four power hitters up front including Sophomore Madison Cytlak, a close friend to Milan’s sophomores, Emily Raubuch and Jules Markham. Emily and Madison faced off against each other in the circle and neither would want this game to be any other way.
Tecumseh started strong scoring four quick runs in the first. Milan came back and answered with two of their own in the second. It was a hard fought close game that ended with Milan winning its third consecutive District Championship.
Milan played Riverview, a team they had lost to twice in the regular season.  This was a game the Big Reds wanted. They felt they had not played their best games earlier in the season and wanted to prove they were worthy of being there. Riverview’s Grace Cheleman started the game with a hard ground ball up the right-field line but Raubuch came back strong and struck out the next three batters, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Milan finally broke through scoring four in the second inning and never looked back. The game was called in the sixth inning due to poor weather conditions and standing water on the field with the score in Milan’s favor 5-1.  Jules Markham said, “We struggled playing against Riverview in previous games, so we knew they would come into this game thinking they would walk away with a win. We stayed humble and played our game”. The Big Reds were headed to their third straight Regional Championship.
Flat Rock has a high powered offense and a strong pitcher in Sophomore Sarah Kopp. Both teams went down in order in the first. Milan’s Emily Raubuch wanted to win this one for the seniors and poured every bit she had into it as did Flat Rock’s Kopp. The two were impressive through seven innings. Emily with 12 strikeouts and Sarah forcing Milan to scatter hits in each inning stranding runners.  Flat Rock took the lead when Emily Cerroni hit a 2 run home run to go up 2-1 in the sixth inning. Milan’s chances were not looking good but senior shortstop Sam Hill hit a home run of her own to tie it in the seventh. The atmosphere was electric. Each player giving their all and Milan’s crowd and fielders jumping at each of Emily’s strikeouts. The game was one of the best that Milan had played. Emily Raubuch pitched all 9 innings only surrendering 5 hits and striking out a 15. “I gave it everything I had, I threw as hard as I could but it just didn’t work out. I am so proud of how we played,” she said.
The team finished their season 17-14 and earned Academic All-State and Academic All Huron League for excellence in the classroom. Freshman Lauren Chrysler took home All-District and All-Region outfield.  Senior Chelsea Dyer, All-District and All-Region utility player, Junior Mikayla Maurer, All-District and All-Region Designated Player. Sam Hill earned All-District and All-Region shortstop. Emily Raubuch earned All-District, All-Region, First Team All-Huron League and Monroe Sports All-Region team.  The team graduates seven seniors and returns six next season. It will be a young team with Mikayla Maurer being the only returning senior, along with four juniors and one sophomore.
