Highlights from October City Council

The city is making the DPW more effective with better equipment, including a compact excavator with a point breaker and compactor attachments for $60,574; and a John Deer skid steer with a 72-inch bucket and heavy duty forks, $41.277 Also a previously-owned snow blower with special attachments to clear the downtown, $1,000.
The equipment purchase is over budget, but the DPW will make it up by selling surplus vehicles and equipment.
The upgrade in equipment was proposed after the new DPW director, Stan Kirton, reviewed the city’s equipment with DPW workers and Jade Smith, City Manager.
City Treasurer Karen Samborski presented the City Council with a proposed fee schedule for licensing septage haulers. The city must review the licenses for companies hauling septage, as well as special licenses for the trucks.
The fees and procedures for septage haulers, were approved by Council in October.
The Milan Fire Dept. building, which the MAFD rents from the city, had a minor roof leak. The City will fix it.
Salenbien Trucking and Excavating was the low bidder for road improvements in Milan, at
$3,655,007. City Manager Jade Smith told the council Salenbien has a good reputation for quality work, and getting work done on time.
The projects are Ferman from 2nd to Main; Canfield, Platt to Division; Water and Sewer extension from County St. to Plank Rd; W. Main Sanitary Sewer improvements; and backup power for pump stations.
The pump stations are at Ann Marie, Neckel Count, W. Main, Marvin and Cherry Street, and North St.
Milan Building Official Craig Strong is following up with enforcements against Paul Parkinson, owner of 26 Wabash, for building code violations. Strong alleges the home, used for apartments, is a dangerous building.
John Koehler, in charge of Milan City’s technology, told the Council he is making arrangements to spend less time and money on emergencies, by upgrading some of the internet and communications systems.
