It may not be everyone’s idea of a great date night, but Carmen Moyer said spending time at the archery range at the Washtenaw County Sportsman’s Club with her husband Brett is a fun thing to do on a Friday night.
New to archery, Carmen said she appreciates the informal help the instructors give.   She is using a 20-pound recurve she likes for the organic feel, but she may try a compound bow at some point.
“Many of the ladies there are crack shots,” Carmen said, “but l’m not very good.”  I may improve, she said, but for now she’s just having fun.  Moyer may be a bit modest, as she did get two bullseyes at ten yards, but missed at 20-yeards.
“We shoot at paper targets until the end of the session, when we aim for 3-D animals,” she said.  Describing the target, Carmen said, there is a turkey, boar and a bear that has a dollar bill in its belly.  Whoever gets closest to the George Washington’s face wins the dollar.
Needless to say, Carmen didn’t come home with more money than she had going in.  The silver lining may be that Brett won the first time out.  She summed up the experience saying, “It is something fun we can do together.”
You don’t need to be a member of the club to join in the fun. The club is located at 5095 Ellis Road in Ypsilanti.  Visit their Facebook page to see what they offer or call 734-434-61777 or visit the website at www.washtenawsportsmansclub.com.
