By Joyce Ervin

Travis York was recognized as Milan High School’s April Student of the Month.  Support staff and counselor Mark Rodan said, “We nominate and have consensus based on Walberg’s criteria when selecting our students.”
The award was initiated by and the designation is provided by Congressman Tim Walberg (R-Tipton) for students that demonstrate exceptional characteristics.
In order to be considered, the student must demonstrate exceptional character, display exemplary behavior, serving as a role model to peers, participate in extra-curricular activities, modeling effective study habits, and/or promoting the public good through community service, providing a distinguished standard for all to follow.
York fits the bill with a cumulative GPA of 4.445 and is praised for his school involvement by school staff.
He is described by staff member, Mary Hammer, as a hardworking young man.  Hammer said, he is very involved with theater and goes out of his way to make sure everything is completed on time with his work and with the plays he is involved in.  Further, she said, “He always has a smile on his face and is a very thoughtful young man.”
York is the president of Milan Mayor’s Youth Council that teaches the fundamentals of government and members are obligated to a minimum of four hours volunteerism in the community each month.
Obviously interested in government, his teacher’s remarks come as no surprise. Social studies teacher, Jaime Schlack, said, “Travis is incredibly bright, easy to get along with, and serves as a quiet leader in our Advanced Placement Government course.”
York is the son of Carol and Eric York.  His mother Carol said, she was very very proud of him, as he always steps up to a challenge.  She said she was most proud of how helpful and considerate he is of others, “he has the biggest heart.”
Regarding his award, York said, “I am honored to receive this recognition from someone so distinguished and involved with my community.”
