The American Legion turns 100

By Thom Publiski

One hundred years ago in 1919 a small group of those who served our nation during World War I rallied to Honor those who have fallen in battle. This could not happen without the community, the Citizens of the Milan area and all other citizens in the greatest country in the world.
We now Celebrate the beginning of our 2nd century and ask that you come to our aid one more time. Each year we Honor those who have fallen at Marble Park Cemetery beginning this year with prayer by Rev. Straderer, and other dignitaries. The Post Honor Guard will provide a 21 gun salute and Milan Resident Patriot Ken Bauman’s 1860 Cannon will fire the final volley awaking the senses of this solemn occasion.
This year our Grand Marshalls this year are Dewight Mitchell and June Kriss. They are both Centurions perfect for our celebration of Honor. The Parade Starts at Marble Park Cemetery lead by our Nationals Flag and continues to the Veterans Wall of Honor.
Here is how you can add to the Memorial & Celebration. Be there, see the Milan High School Band, The American Heritage Girls, Moving Milan Forward The Bob Schrock Military Vehicle caravan and many others who have not yet committed. Prepare a float, call the Post and ask to be involved. Bring a vet, a relative, a friend. Bring a flag of any size with you to show your pride. If you would like to make a donation, call the Legion Post 268, (734-439-2170
With your participation we can make our 2nd Century Celebration a GREAT ONE!
