Big Reds Lose in District Championship but Future Looks Bright

By Ann Raubuch

The Big Reds season did not end they way they were hoping it would, but will have an experienced foundation to build on. Milan drew Jefferson in the opening District game. They jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning with help from an RBI single from Junior pitcher, Emily Raubuch, and a three run home run from Junior third basemen, Makaila Cooper. Jefferson scored 2 in the fourth inning making things interesting but the Big Red’s bats came alive in a big fifth inning. Junior Centerfielder, Jules Markham, Junior outfielder, Hailey Szweda and Sophomore Shortstop, Lauren Chrysler each had RBI’s which resulted in five runs. They beat Jefferson 9-2 to advance to the District Championship against Ida. All though the game was close, Milan fell to the BlueStreaks 3-1. It was the first time in three seasons that the program did not win a District title.
Next years team will be lead by a strong 6-7 member Senior class with high expectations to finish out their final year. Markham, took the loss to heart and hopes to make a difference next season. “It was heartbreaking to not win because I knew we had the potential, but it gives us Seniors more drive for next season to take another District title before we graduate. Working together as a family to all accomplish one goal is what I hope we can work on next season.” Head Coach, Courtney Brothers shares her sentiment, ”I am excited for next season with the players we have returning. I spent this first season getting to know these girls personally so it will be nice coming back already having that relationship. This team is full of talent and only losing one player, we have a solid base coming back. We are losing a solid hitter in Mikayla Maurer but I know the girls can mesh together next season to create a diverse line up. We have a talented upcoming Senior class that can lead this team to success with many underclassman playing key roles. I have high expectations for these girls and I look forward to getting the group back together.
They held their annual banquet on June 12th. several players were recognized and received awards.
