Harry Ervin, a Perkins Fellow, recently graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids following a pre-med track with a double major in biology and biochemistry.
Ervin is well known to the community through his leadership and volunteerism. He founded and served as chairman on the Milan Mayor’s Youth Council and was recognized as the Youth of the Year for 2012 by the Milan Area Chamber of Commerce.
He also served on the steering committee for the inception of the Milan Main Street program and served as a board member representing community youth for the Milan Area Chamber of Commerce.
Based on his leadership skills, he was awarded a scholarship to attend Boys State by the Earl Gladfelter American Legion Post 268. He regularly volunteered at Compassion Ministry.
Ervin was a freelance writer for Digital First Media writing stories for the Saline Reporter, Milan News Leader and Washtenaw
Now publications. He also wrote for the Milan Eagle News.
His involvement with volunteering and serving continued throughout his college years. His resume, too full to capture here, included the running of a boy’s club for inner-city youths.
Realizing his real interest was in research, he was hired by Michigan State University each summer to work in their research lab and presented his findings at an annual 2018 LTER National Conference in California recognized with a Second-Place award.
Ervin is currently working at MSU as a main author on a research paper. He begins his post graduate studies later this year. He is the son of Michael Ervin and grandson of Joyce and Larry Ervin of Milan.
