Welcome Letter from Superintendent Girbach

With the start of the 2019-2020 school year just around the corner, I want to take a moment to welcome everyone to the upcoming year and to share some important information. We have been busy this summer planning for a successful 2019-2020 school year. Amongst other things, this planning included hiring new staff members, scheduling and organizing events, and developing new ideas for the year.
We are pleased to announce that we will be welcoming several new people to the MAS family. While some of these hires were made to replace team members who moved on from Milan, the district is very excited to be expanding our current programming as well. Each building has been hard at work making great staffing decisions. More information on these new team members will be shared in future articles and on the district’s web pages.
At Paddock, Milan Area Schools is adding a Young 5’s classroom. Alison Smith (a long time Milan kindergarten teacher) is excited to take on this new role. Mrs. Smith’s move created a vacancy at kindergarten. In addition, we are pleased to announce that our kindergarten numbers are growing and the decision was made to add an additional kindergarten classroom. The two new kindergarten teachers are Bailee Bryant and Kaitlyn Erehart.
The district has selected a new principal for Symons Elementary School. We are excited to introduce Jennifer Bookout. She comes to us with extensive classroom and administrative experience and she looks forward to meeting everyone on registration day. We also filled two classroom positions and added two additional classrooms (based on class sizes) at Symons. In third grade, we have hired Clare McFadden and Megan Hubbard. At the fifth grade level, we welcome Lisa Martin and Allison Davis.
Milan Middle School welcomes Kim Jasper to her first full year as the Assistant Principal. MMS is currently in the process of hiring a new English Language Arts teacher to fill Mrs. Jasper’s vacancy. More information about the final selection will be shared soon.
Milan High School filled two very important non-classroom vacancies this summer. Catalina Salas will be the new Social Worker and will be located in the counseling office. The new Athletic Director is Robert Hull. His office is located in the main office at MHS.
Several annual school events have been scheduled for August and September. Please make sure to get these dates on your calendar:
August 15 – Registration Day (9:00-12:00, 1:00-4:00, and 5:00-7:00)
August 27 – MMS Open House (6:00-7:30)
August 28 – Symons Open House (5:00-6:30)
August 28 – Paddock Open House (6:00-7:30)
September 9 – MHS Open House (6:00-7:30)
This year, I will be hosting four “MAS Chats”. The purpose of these events will be to promote two way communication between community members and the district. Throughout the year, I will announce the dates and locations of these forums. I hope to hold them at different local businesses. The first “MAS Chat” will be at 6:30 PM on Monday, September 16th, at The Owl. Keep your eye on the MAS website for future dates and locations.
Thank you and enjoy the rest of your summer.

Bryan Girbach, Superintendent of Milan Area Schools
