Who are you really? This is a question I have asked myself many times throughout the years and I would think that I’m not alone. I feel very compelled to write on this topic, because when in a social gathering, where you are just meeting people for the first time, I have heard the following question over and over a thousand times, and I am sure you have as well. In fact, I’m guilty, I do it all the time!
“What do you do for a living?” I know it is just small talk to break the ice, but I remember during my children’s very small growing up years, I chose not to work, as my husband and I felt strongly about just being a Mother in those very early years. We gave up a lot materially to be able to make that happen. As time went by, I too went to work and have had many jobs in my lifetime, but one I had, really made me feel the important need to bring to light this topic.
I always had secretarial, administrative type jobs for the most part, but one I had, made me realize how some people use their career title as if it defined who they were inside. For well over a decade, I cleaned homes and commercial properties and yes that means cleaning the toilets too. Believe me, you can run into some pretty nasty stuff, but for the most part, the bulk of my clients took great pride in their ownership. Long story short, when meeting new people and the topic came up and I gave my answer, more often than not, they turned their conversation to others and I was included in conversation when I interjected.
I truly do respect those who have worked long and hard and given of thousands and thousands of dollars to get their Associates, Bachelors, Masters, and or doctorate. They truly deserve a title, yet it is SO important that the well-earned and deserved title, doesn’t take away from your real name, the real you inside the skin.
Do you know that the Bible has over a 100 names for Jesus? Yep, I have a list!! Yet the universal name that when mentioned, most people know the name. Thing is, with any of those names and even the one He goes by most, how many of the most, truly know who He is in a personal way?
Education defines our career and the higher your degree, generally the bigger the income, but the income and the degree won’t save a soul. When I hear that a movie star or someone whose name has been highlighted in the media all their life has fallen ill or died, I often think, wow….they had all the money to get the best treatment possible, yet they are just like us, all given a certain time on this earth. I am SOOO thankful that many have contributed highly to each of us and what would we do without all the schooled and trained? I thank God for them.
My entire point is to KNOW WHO YOU ARE INSIDE and even if you are the one who doesn’t have a title, know that you can have the highest title of all, when you know within your spirit who you are in Christ!
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12
“ Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” Romans 15:7
